About xprem

xprem is release infrastructure for Expo and React Native teams that need to own their update path, operational data, and deployment boundary.

What xprem is for

xprem is a self-hosted server for over-the-air updates to Expo apps. It implements the Expo Updates protocol, so teams keep the standard expo-updates client while running the release service, database, object storage, and content delivery path on infrastructure they control. The same deployment supports branches, release channels, rollbacks, progressive rollouts, multiple applications, update health, and optional expo-observe telemetry.

The project is built for teams that need more control than a hosted update service provides: private-network deployment, chosen data residency and retention, direct database access, predictable infrastructure costs, and a release path that keeps operating independently of a third-party control plane.

Open core, with a clear boundary

The release engine is MIT licensed. Publishing, branches, channels, rollbacks, progressive rollouts, storage backends, CDN integrations, the dashboard, and Prometheus metrics remain available in the open-source core. Observe is free to run, with source in the repository's ee directories under a separate licence. Organization controls such as SSO, RBAC, audit logs, token restrictions, branch protection, and custom device attributes are commercial features in the same deployable binary.

A capability released under the MIT licence does not later move behind the commercial licence. That rule is part of the project's public open-core policy and is intended to make adoption and long-term operation less ambiguous.

Who builds it

xprem is developed by Mercure Technologies and maintained in public on GitHub. It was previously named expo-open-ota; the rename did not change the codebase, maintainers, or existing compatibility. xprem is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by Expo or 650 Industries.
